  • Dates: Before 1752, the new year started on 25 March. Dates affected below are indicated 20/1/1580/1 i.e. the event was recorded as 1580 but took place in 1581 by our calendar.
  • Spelling: Until the 1700s, scribes simply wrote names as they heard them, and there were many variations of Hodgetts—Hogeis, Hoges, Hoggeatts, Hogetts, Hodget etc—sometimes even in one document.

  • Catholic vs Protestant will styles: The preamble wording in wills may depict that of the scribe rather than the testator and a there were established forms to follow under each sovereign so they cannot absolutely be taken as proof of religion but where a testator uses the Catholic format during a Protestant reign or vice versa that is a stronger indication of their faith.
